Introduction
The Web-APP Project was started in 2001 by WebAPP's founder, Carter Brown, and was based at Carter's own personal home page (mcarterbrown.com). The founding group came up with the name "Web-APP" (or "WebAPP" for short), an acronym for "Web Automated Perl Portal". The group came up with a beginning design and a code base for the script which was originally based on PoAS by Luckie Aria Argathama, which was in turn based on YaWPS (Yet another Web Portal System) by Adrian Heissler.

In November of 2006, Carter ran out of time for Web-APP and passed the project over to Jos Brown, a major contributor since May 2004, long term Project Manager, and maintainer of the web-app.org website during all uptime since February 2005.

(Archives are in chronological order)
  • WebAPPv.0.2 (This was the first public release of WebAPP - Automated Perl Portal)

  • WebAPPv.0.3 (News articles now allow real html format as well as regular text so including pictures in news articles is now possible. Customize link has been added. The user can customize the site to add / remove blocks of code, the welcome message, and the information block. Customize link for admin has been added with all the same prior features and has a broadcast message ability. Just turn the broadcast message on, and type the message. This message will be shown to members online at the time of the message using a javascript prompt. This script is meant to show up everytime the page is refreshed or a link is clicked so do not leave it up too long, you'll annoy the users. The code is found in the header.pl file and can easily be changed to only show once by adding a cookie or changing it to a nicer looking dhtml script. Instant Messages now include a popup when new messages arrive. The popup is set to only go off once per browser session per use of the cookies. This can be changed in the code.)

  • WebAPPv.0.4 (Help file has been added. Broadcast message was changed to use dhtml for a better look, and the color and background of the message is customizable in the admin section. F.A.Q.

Question: Where did these old versions come from?

Answer: The Web-APP project has been in existence since 2001. The Project was first hosted on the domain "mcarterbrown.com" which was the original developer's home page for all things related to paintball. He then began using it for the Web-APP Project. In 2002 the domain name "web-app.org" was obtained specifically for the project, with "modapp.org" following after it for mods, plugins and other addons for the Automated Perl Portal. The files you'll find here are all from the original sites (web-app.org and/or modapp.org) and were saved over a period of time. Many of these files were sent by Carter Brown (the original owner of Web-APP and current co-copyright holder of the script) on 18 April 2008. These archives are released under the General Public License. You can get the current version from Web-APP.org.

Question: I'm looking for a certain version you don't have listed here? How can I get it?

Answer: What you see is what I have had time to add to the site. I recently added some versions prior to 0.8 that were sent by Carter to the lead developer of Web-APP.org team on 18 April 2008. As I have time I will be adding more files to the site. If there are versions not listed, you might want to check around or do a search for them in your favorite search engine.

Question: Weren't you once associated with WebAPP NE?

Answer: I was once an admin at their website but due to differences of opinions and what I felt was a blatant disrespect of other people among some of the other admins, I requested that my admin privs be removed, thus I left that group after a short stay there. The only reason I joined was because I found a link to it on Web-APP.org and was given the impression that the new site was a replacement of the original site because it was not very accessible. It wasn't long after that it turned out some of the admins started leaving after some bickering back and forth over various issues. I am not affiliated with "WebAPP NE".

Question: Can I get older copies of WebAPP NE here? and What's the difference between Web-APP.org's version and WebAPP NE?

Answer: "WebAPP NE" has only been around for a couple of years (the owner purchased his domain in May of 2006) and the version offered there isn't compatible with the current version of Web-APP. I have seen the script but I don't use it. Besides, I don't have much use for exe files anyway since I use Linux. It's claimed that "WebAPP NE" is totally rewritten from version 0.9.9.3 (mostly with code updates by Jos Brown from Web-APP.org), but after examining the script for myself, I don't see too many changes except some theme modifications and a few additions wrapped inside a Windows exe and some "tricks" inside. So, WebAPP NE appears to be simply another version of the script. Whatever the case, I'd rather only host archives from the original Project with all the old themes, graphics, etc. for those who are interested in examining the code and how it has developed over the years. The people who have the "WebAPP NE" script recently changed the license from GNU-GPL to what appears to be some sort of commercial license which is not compatible with the philosophy of free software or GPL. The original script from mcarterbrown.com and web-app.org have always been licensed under GNU-GPL and is open source. While there was some talk about changing the license a long time ago, those developers are no longer with the Web-APP Project on web-app.org, and as such, the original script remains under the General Public License.

Question: Is it true, what I read on a couple of sites, that you went back to NE?

Answer: I've seen those comments and I assure you they are not true and I did not post them. I have no reason to go back to their group since I'm now working with the older site again. I did find out that a couple of people from the "NE group" posted false information under various Web-APP.org members' names in an effort to give the impression that we were endorsing their version of the script and to spread their links in several social networking groups. I've also seen the threads that I posted when I was a member of the NE group now changed along with posts made by some of the other admins who left their group. Unless their script is still vulnerable to malicious attack by hackers, only admins and moderators can edit someone's threads. There's some information documented about this here.

Question: Are you the owner and developer of Web-APP?

Answer: No, I am not the owner or the developer of Web-APP. I joined the Web-APP Project back in 2001 when it was hosted on mcarterbrown.com before there was really a public release of the script. When I found out how easy it was to split the files up to use on a networking system, I began using the script on my office Intranet and began offering it for my clients who have been using it ever since. I soon started offering some translation services for Web-APP in Portuguese and had a hobby site offering avatar downloads for people who wanted different graphics from what typically came with what eventually became known as the standard release of Web-APP. I'm currently working with a couple of people on an SQL PHP version of Web-APP, ported from Web-APP (web-app.org), PHP-Fusion 6 and Ariadne 2.4, all licensed freely under GNU-GPL, called "WebAppSQL".

Question: Who owns the copyright of the Web-APP script and the domain name? There's been a lot said on another site saying it was stolen. Is this true?

Answer: The domain name "web-app.org" was transferred to Jos Brown by Carter Brown - he owned the domain name. In communications dated November 2006, Carter Brown, the original developer and owner of the Web-APP script, told Jos Brown that he was transferring the domain to her. Carter asked Jos (Bantychick) if she wanted to use the web-app.org domain name, to point people to her site or just use the domain itself - either way was fine with him. Carter later gave the domain name to Jos.

Web-APP Web Automated Perl Portal, available from mcarterbrown.com since 2001 and from Web-APP.org since 2002, is Open Source software licensed under the GNU General Public License. The name "Web-APP", also known as "WebAPP" and "Web-APP Automated Perl Portal", and all artisitic creations thereof, are copyright (c) 2002-2008 by Carter Brown and Jos Brown. The name "Web-APP" and the Web-APP Logo are trademarked as it relates to "computer operating system software to facilitate computer use and operation" and/or as it relates to the Perl script originally offered on mcarterbrown.org and web-app.org, under Federal and International Common Law and Trademark Laws as appropriate. So, in answer to your question, Jos Brown owns the domain name web-app.org and she shares the copyright of the script with its original author Carter Brown. The same people who claim the script has been stolen were not even around when the script itself was originally written. The site you refer to didn't come online until 2006. The original development of Web-APP began in 2001. All of this can be verified by independent sources not affiliated with any project called "Web-APP", for example, check the Way Back Machine under mcarterbrown.com and web-app.org archives as well as Whois records.

Question: Why did some of the admins leave the NE group?
